Hydropower energy, particularly Small Hydropower (SHP), has attracted increasing attention due to its diversity, simplicity, and ease of accessibility. Consequently, the construction of SHP plants is being prioritized by many countries, including Iran, as a cost-effective source of electricity generation. The main objective of this study was to present an integrated framework for identifying and locating suitable sites for SHPs along the Marun River in the Edenak watershed by combining Fuzzy Logic, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and GIS. Within the GIS environment, several techno-economic criteria were defined: waterfall head, distance to roads, distance to power transmission lines, distance to residential areas, and land use. These criteria were converted into a final land suitability map using fuzzy membership functions and subsequently weighted via the AHP technique. Following this, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was executed to estimate the flow rate of the Marun River within the Edenak basin. The results indicated that the criteria of waterfall head and flow rate received the highest weights. The fuzzy valuation of land use demonstrated that barren lands exhibited the highest suitability for SHP installation, while forests showed the lowest. Finally, three optimal locations were selected for SHP installation, with estimated cumulative power capacities of 946 kW, 2,230 kW, and 1,004 kW, respectively. The findings suggest that employing this combined approach-integrating SWAT modeling, fuzzy valuation for managing uncertainties, and the AHP technique for hierarchical weighting-provides a powerful and robust tool for determining suitable areas for SHP plant installation in river basins.
