Under conditions of globalization and the proliferation of media networks, modes of identity representation and mechanisms of social distinction in multi ethnic societies have been profoundly restructured. The uneven encounter between tradition and processes commonly framed as modernity particularly within transitional social fields has facilitated the reconfiguration of symbolic capital and the renegotiation of boundaries of belonging. Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Province, marked by kinship based cultural ethnic formations while simultaneously exposed to the pressures of urbanization and developmental intervention, constitutes a paradigmatic site for examining these dynamics. Within this socio spatial configuration, personal names and surnames no longer operate merely as indicators of lineage continuity; rather, they function as symbolic resources through which actors actively negotiate distinction, pursue social positioning, and rearticulate identity in emergent urban fields.
This study adopts a qualitative Case Research design informed by a grounded theory strategy. Empirical materials were generated through in depth interviews with twenty individuals who had experienced surname change, complemented by documentary and archival sources. Data analysis proceeded through open, axial, and selective coding. The resulting paradigmatic model identifies identity oriented distinction as the core phenomenon, shaped by causal conditions such as experiences ofsymbolic inequality, aspirations toward upward social mobility, anddeliberate distancing from tribal social orders. Thisprocess unfolds within specific cultural ethnic contexts while simultaneously intersecting with the global circulation of symbolic forms and identity representations. Itis further conditioned by intervening factors including institutional accessibility to name change procedures, legitimizing roles oflocal elites, degrees offamilial resilience, and patterns of media framing.
