Urban spaces in Iran have always been subject to change and transformation throughout history, and the important source of these changes has been the ideas governing the production of space in cities. Among all the ideas, political thought in the form of various discourses has had a great impact on the production of urban space during numerous and successive historical periods. The analysis of the components present in each of the ideas governing the production of urban spaces throughout Iranian history is the focus of the present research. The division of historical periods in this article is placed into three groups: ancient, (Islamic), and modern. In terms of paradigm and intellectual philosophy, this research is placed in the group of critical research, in which the reading of the political, social, and economic history of the city is based on the approach of critical realism. The approach in this article is of a mixed type and its strategy is placed in the group of qualitative strategies in which the content analysis technique has been used. The data collection tool was library studies and the review of texts, works, documents and evidence, and in-depth exploratory interviews with experts in the field of urban studies. Qualitative statistical models were used to summarize and categorize the data. For this purpose, the DEMATEL model, interpretive structural analysis (IMS), and MICMAC analysis were used to identify the cause-and-effect relationship between the components involved in the production of space in different historical periods of Iranian cities.
