Urban development and the expansion of human activities in recent decades have led to significant changes in nighttime illumination patterns, establishing nighttime light (NTL) data as a robust proxy for monitoring human and spatial dynamics across broad spatiotemporal scales. This study investigates the trends in nighttime light variations in Khuzestan Province from 1992 to 2025 using data from the DMSP-OLS and VIIRS-DNB sensors. To develop a continuous and inter-comparable time series, data from both sensors were integrated through power-transformation-based inter-calibration and temporal smoothing. Subsequently, trend analysis was performed using time-series techniques, linear regression, cumulative growth analysis, and projections up to the year 2040.
The results indicate that the mean intensity of nighttime light increased from 11.05 units in 1992 to 22.62 units in 2025, representing a cumulative growth of 104.69% and a mean annual growth rate of 2.19%. Linear regression analysis confirmed a stable upward trend with demonstrating the model’s high explanatory power for long-term changes. A comparative analysis of NTL imagery between the beginning and the end of the study period reveals not only an increase in light intensity but also a spatial expansion of illuminated areas, transitioning from a concentrated multi-focal pattern to a more integrated, networked, and extensive structure.
In summary, this study demonstrates that the integration of DMSP-OLS and VIIRS-DNB data, combined with time-series harmonization, provides a reliable framework for long-term NTL monitoring. This approach serves as an effective tool for analyzing urban development, assessing shifts in human activity, and supporting sustainable regional planning.
