Vegetation cover is an important indicator of urban environmental quality and ecosystem sustainability, and monitoring its changes is essential for natural resource management and urban planning. This study investigated the spatial and temporal variations of vegetation cover in Kerman City from 2000 to 2025 using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from LANDSAT, Sentinel-2, and MODIS imagery. The objectives were to analyze vegetation dynamics, compare Sentinel-2 and MODIS performance in NDVI extraction, and evaluate their suitability for urban vegetation monitoring. After image preprocessing, NDVI was calculated and analyzed using Google Earth Engine (GEE) and Geographic Information System (GIS) through temporal, seasonal, statistical, and spatial analyses. The results indicated an overall increasing trend in vegetation cover, although variations related to drought and climatic fluctuations occurred during some years. Sentinel-2, due to its higher spatial resolution, provided more accurate detection of localized vegetation changes and stress, while MODIS, with greater temporal continuity, was more effective for identifying long-term trends and climate-related variations. NDVI values ranged from 0.04 to 0.17 for Sentinel-2 and 0.06 to 0.16 for MODIS, with annual mean values of 0.07–0.10 and 0.10–0.13, respectively, indicating slight overestimation by MODIS. The findings show that Sentinel-2 is more suitable for detailed urban vegetation monitoring, whereas MODIS is more effective for long-term analyses. Integrating both datasets provides a reliable framework for assessing vegetation dynamics and supporting sustainable urban planning in Kerman City.
