The rapid growth of urbanization and the increasing demand for travel in the metropolis of Ahvaz have led to challenges such as traffic congestion, reduced safety, and declining efficiency of urban transportation networks. In this context, the adoption of modern technologies and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) has emerged as an effective approach to enhance traffic management and improve the quality of urban services. The present study aims to model the impact of smart technologies on urban transport safety and efficiency, with a particular emphasis on citizens’ trust and acceptance in the city of Ahvaz. This research employs a descriptive–analytical method, and data were collected through a questionnaire distributed among 300 residents of Ahvaz. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in AMOS software. The results indicate that the conceptual model demonstrates a good fit, explaining approximately 71% of the variance in the dependent variable (urban transport safety and efficiency). Among the examined dimensions, users’ trust and acceptance had the greatest impact (0.75), followed by transport efficiency (0.57) and transport safety (0.37).The findings suggest that in the urban context of Ahvaz, the success of intelligent transportation systems depends less on technological advancements and more on public trust, institutional coordination, and policy and managerial support. Overall, the study concludes that the development of smart technologies in developing cities will be effective only when accompanied by social, institutional, and policy-oriented approaches alongside technical infrastructure improvements.
