This study investigates the spatial pattern of annual precipitation across Iran, utilizing data from 72 synoptic stations over a period of up to 63 years (1960–2023). To visualize the spatial distribution of precipitation, various interpolation methods were employed. Multivariate regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR) were applied to model the spatial relationships between precipitation and geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) as well as altitude. The application of the GWR model in this research revealed spatial patterns of precipitation dependence on geographical variables with higher accuracy. The results indicated that annual precipitation in Iran is characterized by strong spatial variability and uneven distribution, at a national scale, geographical coordinates exert a greater influence on precipitation distribution than altitude, despite the latter's regional effects. The strongest correlations between precipitation and spatial coordinates were observed in the northern and northwestern regions of the country, while weaker correlations were found in the central and southern areas. Additionally, longitude significantly affected precipitation in most regions (in 87% of the stations), while latitude showed a stronger influence in the western west, northwest, and southwest) parts of the country. Altitude primarily influenced precipitation in the northern and western mountainous regions. Finally, cluster analysis identified five distinct precipitation regions in Iran, each characterized by unique precipitation patterns.
